History of Santa Sofia’s
The church was founded by the
Lombard Arechi II of Benevento
around 760, as testified by
numerous documents signed by
him, some of which are in the Museo
del Sannio (Museum of Samnium)
next to the church.
The building was built on imitation
of the Palatine Chapel of the
Lombard king Liutprand in Pavia
and, after the defeat of Desiderius
by Charlemagne and the fall of the
Lombard kingdom in northern Italy
(774), it became the national church
of the Lombard who had taken
shelter in the Dukedom of
Benevento.
