Dyeing fabric in a natural way It is possible to make natural dyes from plants, fruit and flowers. Would you like to try this funny and creative work? First of all you must get a natural fabric such as cotton, wool, silk or linen. The fabric must be clean. Then make a dye solution: boil water with salt (one tablespoon for each litre). Cut the plant into small pieces, add to the boiling water and simmer for about an hour. Strain and add the fabric. The more you keep it soaked, the stronger the shade you get. Let it cool and then take the fabric out: it will be of a new beautiful colour! Guide to colours: Yellow: saffron or chamomile for a lighter shade Orange: curry powder Red: beetroot Pink: red cabbage Purple: elderberries Blue: blueberries or blackberries Brown: coffee Green: spinach, mint The Italian 3A team Let’s try and show our creativity
