Target controlled infusion anaesthesia in children
Introduction
Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) has grown rapidly in popularity
over the last two decades in both adult and paediatric anaesthesia.
This rapid increase in popularity is in part due to the widespread
availability of drugs with favourable pharmacological properties and
the development of new concepts in pharmacokinetic modelling,
as well as advances in computer technology that have allowed the
development of sophisticated anaesthetic delivery systems.
This
has led to refinements in blood plasma concentration targeting and
dosing adjustments.
A target controlled infusion (TCI) is an infusion
controlled by a real time pharmacokinetic model that achieves a user
defined blood or tiss
