On 5th October 2011 the container vessel MV Rena ran
aground on the Astrolabe Reef about six nautical miles
north of Motti Island, New Zealand.
According to Environmental Secretary Nick Smith – MV
Rena tried to take a shortcut because of lack of time.
However, untill today it is not completely clear how this
naval accident could happen.
Neither the Master of MV
Rena nor the 2nd Officer have contradicted or confirmed
Smith‘s statement so far.
containers have already fallen aboard as a consequence of the heavy list of more than 20 degrees.
In addition
to claims to the ship many other damages caused to the
environment are indicated.

The judge further remanded the two defendants on bail until 21st December 2011, and confirmed
the suppression orders in place would continue until further notice.
