Located in a ‘highly disaster-prone region’, Georgia frequently experiences earthquakes, floods, debris flows, landslides and avalanches. Such incidents occur mostly in mountainous parts of the country and along its major rivers, and can severely affect local communities. The development of the country was affected by civil unrest and armed conflict in the 1990s; about 1 million people left Georgia and more than 250,000 became internally displaced from the conflict-affected regions.
