to promised subsidies not being paid by the
Department of Social Development.
This was announced last week by Erna Eloff,
SAVF (Suid Afrikaanse vroue federasie) Regional Manager in Limpopo.
The SAVF is one of the largest NGO s in
South Africa and is mainly concerned with
social development.
In Limpopo, the SAVF has
been active for more than 100 years.
According to Eloff, they were forced to
withdraw from the Phalaborwa-based shelter,
Huis Maroela, after the department decided
not to subsidise the shelter.
"The SAVF has been counselling and empowering victims of abuse and violence at Huis
Maroela for years.
The Department of Social Development
made numerous promises regarding subsidies
for more than a decade.
