Giving aid
Given that there are huge differences in wealth between the richest
and poorest countries in the world, it seems only right that the rich
should give a helping hand to the poor.
When a country receives help from abroad it is called international
aid or overseas aid.
At a very rough estimate, the total amount of international aid each
year amounts to £100 billion.
That is a lot of money.
You could do a
lot of good with that money but, it has to be said, it still does not
stop half the world from being hungry.
So who gives this huge
amount of money?
There are three
sources of international
aid.
Voluntary aid is aid
from fund-raising
charities.
They obtain
their money from
donations by the public.
Bilateral aid is from one country to another.
It is a type of official
aid.
The money comes from taxes that people pay.
The country giving
the aid is called the donor country and its government decides what
aid should be given.
