The readings this advent have been
more powerful than they ever were
before.
They speak of a new age; a
vision of people living together
happily, caring for each other, where
nature and creation is loved and
respected and responds in kind: a new
age, where God’s love is truly
experienced and transforms everyone
and everything.
But, “How can this be?” We ask.
Today, the number of people out of
work has reached a new high.
The very
people who bailed out the banks and
the country, are not only losing their
jobs but having their support from the
government reduced, and will soon
face rising costs across the board.
Meanwhile the rich, the people they
saved, get richer .

This is a vision
of austerity, hardship and suffering;
one that lacks justice and peace.
When Jesus was born ,his country was
ruled by a brutal foreign power, a
power it abused.
The puppet King,
Herod, was brutal and merciless.
The
situation had changed little when he
died so cruelly
