La aplicación del concepto de distracción para el tratamiento
de las deformidades craneofaciales comienza en el año 19721 cuando se consigue realizar un alargamiento de la mandíbula de perro.
Posteriormente otros trabajos experimentales2,3,4 han contribuido
al conocimiento de distintos aspectos biológicos de este procedimiento.
Su aplicación a la clínica humana comienza con los trabajos de McCarthy5,6 de tal manera que, a partir de él, consigue utilizarse este método de forma sistematizada en determinadas deformidades craneofaciales.
